Mechanical Maintenance

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Mechanical Maintenance will offer courses preparing students to work as millwrights or machinists for local industry. Students will build an understanding of maintenance tools, industrial safety, basic machine shop operations, basic millwright operations, and industrial troubleshooting. Students will learn how to repair machinery and operate lathes and other machines and tools used as both a millwright and a machinist. The program provides hands-on training in the classroom, laboratory, and through internships.

Career Information

A degree in Mechanical Maintenance opens opportunities in the refining, petrochemical, polymers, plastics, pulp/paper industries, power generation, oil and gas production, and other process industries.

Students will learn how to repair machinery and operate lathes and other machines and tools used as both a millwright and a machinist. Graduates of the Mechanical Maintenance Program may be required to complete a drug screen, background check, and a physical exam to be employed.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau, statistics show that the Mechanical Maintenance program is a high demand, high wage program in the local area and throughout Texas.

The median salary for a Mechanical Maintenance graduate is $29.00 an hour.

How long will it take to graduate?

The Mechanical Maintenance degree takes two years, while the certificate takes one year. Courses taken in the certificate degree plan transfer to the associate's degree for students who choose to earn the full degree.

Does Lamar State College Port Arthur offer internship opportunities?

Yes. As part of the degree plan, students are placed with local petrochemical and manufacturing companies where they will receive hands-on experience in the machining and millwright field.
